Concept map maker
A concept map differs from a mind map in one important way: the lines are labelled. Every connection states the relationship, so the map reads as a set of propositions rather than a cloud of associations.

That constraint is why concept maps are used in teaching. Labelling a line forces you to know what the relationship actually is, and reveals immediately when you do not.
A worked example: how plants make food
Put Photosynthesis near the top. Link it to Sunlight with the words is powered by, to Carbon dioxide and to Water with uses, and to Glucose and to Oxygen with produces. Then link Glucose to Plant growth with is used for, and Leaves to Photosynthesis with are where it happens.
Every line carries a verb, so each link reads as a sentence: photosynthesis uses water. That is what separates a concept map from a mind map, and it is also what makes it a good test of understanding: a link you cannot label is a relationship you have not yet worked out.
Building the map
- Put the broadest idea near the top. Concept maps usually read general to specific.
- Add related ideas as ovals below and around it.
- Connect two ideas and label the line with a verb: causes, requires, is a kind of, produces.
- Read each connection out loud as a sentence. If it does not make sense, the label is wrong.
- Add cross-links between different branches. These show real understanding.
- Export a PNG for your notes or a PDF to hand out.

Concept map or mind map?
- A mind map has one centre
- Everything radiates from a single subject, and lines are usually unlabelled.

- Ideas connect in any direction, including back across branches.
- Labels are the difference
- A mind map associates. A concept map asserts, and can therefore be right or wrong.
- Use both
- Mind map to gather, concept map to organise once you know what you have.

Concept map questions
Do all the lines need labels?
In a strict concept map, yes. That is what separates it from a mind map, and it is where the thinking happens.
Which way should arrows point?
In the direction the sentence reads. If photosynthesis produces glucose, the arrow points at glucose.
How many concepts is too many?
Fifteen to twenty-five on one page is usually the readable limit. Beyond that, split by theme.
Is there a right answer?
Not one, but there are wrong ones. A mislabelled link is a factual error, which is exactly why these are useful for checking understanding.
